In short: Before Michael Jackson became the King of Pop, he was the pint-sized lead singer of a family act that redefined soul music. Managed by their father, the Jackson 5 rose from local talent shows to Motown stardom, shattering racial barriers and setting a record for consecutive chart-topping hits.

The group originated in Gary, Indiana, where Joseph Jackson, a crane operator and former boxer, identified musical potential in his sons. After catching them playing his guitar, he began a rigorous training regimen. The brothers—Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and eventually five-year-old Michael—rehearsed daily under strict, often harsh, discipline. By the mid-1960s, they were honing their craft on the Chitlin Circuit, performing at schools and theaters while observing established soul legends like James Brown.

Their breakthrough arrived when Motown Records president Berry Gordy, Jr. signed the group in 1969. The band’s aesthetic—defined by large Afros, vibrant fashion, and precise choreography—complemented their youthful energy. In 1970, they achieved a historic feat by landing four consecutive number-one pop singles. These tracks, including "I Want You Back" and "ABC," cemented their status as a cultural phenomenon and established Michael as a singular prodigy. Their success at Motown continued until 1975, when contract disputes led the group to move to Epic Records.

Upon joining Epic, the group rebranded as the Jacksons, with Randy replacing Jermaine, who stayed at Motown. While the band maintained consistent success through 1984, the trajectory of Michael’s career shifted dramatically. His solo work, particularly the 1979 album Off the Wall, showcased a new level of artistic ambition. Produced by Quincy Jones, the album’s massive success and Michael’s subsequent solo achievements eventually eclipsed the group's collective output, marking the transition from a family-led vocal act to the rise of a global solo superstar.
