May Pang: The woman who orchestrated John Lennon's most productive and happiest years
In short: Often relegated to a footnote in Beatles history, May Pang was the catalyst for John Lennon's 'Lost Weekend.' Beyond the tabloid headlines, she acted as a vital creative partner, facilitating his reconciliation with his son Julian and overseeing the production of his most successful solo albums during the mid-1970s.
Born in Manhattan to Chinese immigrants, May Pang began her career at ABKCO Records before becoming John Lennon and Yoko Ono's personal assistant. In 1973, as Lennon and Ono's marriage faltered, Ono encouraged Pang to become Lennon's companion. This initiated an 18-month period Lennon later dubbed his 'Lost Weekend,' a time he privately described as perhaps the happiest of his life.
During this era, Pang proved instrumental in Lennon's creative and personal life. She managed the chaotic recording sessions for his Rock 'n' Roll album and served as production coordinator for Walls and Bridges, which yielded his only number-one solo US single, 'Whatever Gets You thru the Night.' Beyond the studio, Pang fostered Lennon's reconnection with his estranged son, Julian, and encouraged a brief musical reconciliation between Lennon and Paul McCartney.
The relationship ended abruptly in 1975 when Lennon reconciled with Ono. Despite the sudden split, Pang continued a successful career in music PR, working with artists like Bob Marley and Robert Palmer. She later documented her experiences in the memoir Loving John and a collection of candid photographs, Instamatic Karma, which captured intimate moments of a Beatle in transition. Her role in Lennon's life was eventually revisited in the 2022 documentary, The Lost Weekend: A Love Story.
While the public narrative often focused on the sensational aspects of their time together, those closest to the situation, including Cynthia Lennon, acknowledged Pang's positive influence. She remained a bridge to Lennon's past, maintaining friendships with Julian and Cynthia long after the relationship concluded, and even receiving an invitation to Linda McCartney's memorial service—a testament to her enduring, if quiet, place in the inner circle of the Beatles' extended family.
