The seven-minute masterpiece born from a moment of unexpected compassion
In short: In 1968, Paul McCartney composed a song while driving to comfort the young son of his friend, John Lennon. What began as a private gesture of empathy for a child facing parental separation transformed into a global anthem of optimism and a record-breaking pop phenomenon.
Originally titled "Hey Jules," the ballad was written by Paul McCartney to soothe Julian Lennon during the upheaval of his parents' separation. Following John Lennon's affair with Yoko Ono and subsequent split from Cynthia Lennon in May 1968, McCartney visited the five-year-old at the family's Weybridge home. The lyrics were designed to encourage the child to find hope amidst the instability, though the song's meaning remains a subject of debate; while McCartney intended it for Julian, Lennon famously believed it was written for himself.
The recording process was a landmark in studio technology, marking the Beatles' first use of eight-track equipment at Trident Studios. The sessions were not without friction. During the July 1968 sessions, a heated argument erupted between McCartney and George Harrison over a guitar part, with McCartney ultimately vetoing Harrison's more reactive approach. The track's massive scale was achieved through a 36-piece orchestra and an extended, four-minute coda featuring a "Na-na-na na" refrain that has since become one of music's most iconic sing-alongs.
Commercially, the song was a juggernaut. Released in August 1968 as the first single on the Apple label, it reached number one in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada. Its nine-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 tied the all-time record for the era, a position it held for nine years. With approximately eight million copies sold, it remains a cornerstone of the Beatles' legacy and a testament to the power of a melody designed for togetherness.
