How a New Jersey garage band invented horror punk and became a musical cult
In short: Formed in 1977, the Misfits blended B-movie aesthetics with aggressive punk to create a genre-defining sound. Despite a volatile history of lineup changes and legal battles, their iconic skull logo and dark, cinematic imagery left an indelible mark on rock music, influencing acts from Metallica to My Chemical Romance.
The Misfits emerged in Lodi, New Jersey, in February 1977, founded by Glenn Danzig and Jerry Caiafa—who would later adopt the pseudonym Jerry Only. The band took their name from Marilyn Monroe’s final 1961 film. Early on, they struggled to find a consistent sound, even rehearsing for three months without a guitarist by using Danzig’s electric piano. By 1978, the group began shifting toward the horror-inspired aesthetic that would define them, with Danzig writing songs based on science fiction and B-horror films, while Only developed the signature 'devilock' hairstyle.
The band’s visual identity was cemented in 1979 with the release of the 'Horror Business' single, which featured a skeletal figure inspired by a 1946 film serial, The Crimson Ghost. This image became the band’s permanent logo. Despite their growing underground influence, the original lineup was plagued by internal friction. Danzig, increasingly dissatisfied, eventually announced the band’s dissolution in October 1983, just two months before the release of their hardcore-influenced album Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood.
Following the breakup, a bitter legal battle ensued over songwriting credits and the rights to the Misfits name and imagery. In 1995, an out-of-court settlement allowed Only and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein to continue performing as the Misfits. This led to a new era featuring vocalist Michale Graves, which saw the band pivot toward a heavier, metal-influenced sound. While the group underwent numerous iterations over the following decades—including tours with members of Black Flag and the Ramones—the original trio of Danzig, Only, and Doyle did not reunite until September 2016 for Riot Fest, marking their first performance together in 33 years.
