Disco Dancer made Mithun Chakraborty a star from Mumbai to the Soviet Union
Mithun Chakraborty won a National Film Award for his very first role, in an art-house film by Mrinal Sen. Six years later he was doing the opposite: a flashy dance musical, Disco Dancer, that became the first Indian film to gross ₹1 billion and turned him into a household name as far away as the Soviet Union and China.
Born Gouranga Chakraborty in Calcutta in 1950, he left a chemistry degree unfinished at Scottish Church College, trained at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, and spent time among the Naxalites before breaking with the movement despite the danger to himself. His debut, Mrigayaa in 1976, earned the best actor prize, and the Bengali hit Nadi Theke Sagare in 1978 became his breakthrough.
Disco Dancer in 1982, with Bappi Lahiri's chart-topping soundtrack, sealed his superstardom, and he peaked in the mid-1980s with hits such as Pyar Jhukta Nahin. His range reached beyond formula: Sheesha was one of the first Hindi films about workplace sexual harassment, Agneepath in 1990 flopped commercially but won him a Filmfare award, and the Bengali drama Tahader Katha brought a second best actor National Award. A third came for playing the mystic Ramakrishna in a 1998 biopic of Swami Vivekananda.
By the mid-1990s his matinee-idol years were fading, and he turned to cheap productions, many from his own banner, while holding the record for the most Hindi films as leading man. He even turned down Mani Ratnam's acclaimed Iruvar because cropping his hair for it would have disrupted 15 other films he was shooting. Ratnam's Guru in 2007 finally restored his standing, followed by crowd-pleasers like Golmaal 3 and Kick. He has now made some 350 films in languages from Hindi and Bengali to Telugu, Tamil and Kannada.
Off screen he owns the Monarch hospitality and education group, co-founded a trust for struggling actors with Dilip Kumar and Sunil Dutt in 1992, and presided as Grand Master over the record-setting television contest Dance India Dance. He received the Padma Bhushan in January 2024 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Indian cinema's top honour, for 2022.
