In short: Formed in 1989, Mr. Children became a cultural phenomenon in Japan, dominating charts for decades. With over 50 million records sold and a string of consecutive number-one hits, the band evolved from humble beginnings into one of the most commercially successful and influential rock acts in Japanese music history.

The band originated from a group called the Walls, which included Kazutoshi Sakurai, Kenichi Tahara, and Keisuke Nakagawa. After adopting the name Mr. Children in 1989 and recruiting drummer Hideya Suzuki, the quartet struggled initially, facing rejection from record labels and enduring a three-month hiatus in 1991. Their breakthrough arrived after signing with Toy's Factory and collaborating with producer Takeshi Kobayashi, who became a pivotal figure in shaping their sound.

The mid-1990s marked the emergence of the 'Mis-chil Phenomenon,' a period of immense popularity fueled by hits like 'Innocent World' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows.' Their 10th single, 'Namonaki Uta,' set a domestic record for the highest sales in its opening week, a milestone that stood for 15 years. Despite their massive success, the band faced internal challenges, including a temporary hiatus in 1997 and a health crisis in 2002 when Sakurai was hospitalized due to a cerebellar blockage, which led to the cancellation of a major tour.

Beyond their musical output, the group has engaged in significant social and environmental work. In 2003, Sakurai helped establish the non-profit financial institution AP Bank, which focuses on renewable energy and disaster relief. This commitment to social issues often mirrored the themes in their music, which evolved from pop-star personas to more personal and message-driven compositions, such as the 2007 album Home. Today, they remain a dominant force in Japanese music, consistently filling domes and maintaining a deep connection with their audience.
