In short: Mulayam Singh Yadav rose from a farming family to dominate Uttar Pradesh politics for decades. A socialist disciple who once aimed for the wrestling ring, he navigated India’s volatile political landscape to lead the state government three times and influence the national stage as a key defense minister.

Born in 1939 in the Etawah district, Mulayam Singh Yadav initially pursued wrestling before shifting his focus to political science. His career was defined by the teachings of socialist thinker Ram Manohar Lohia, whose advocacy for social justice and the rights of marginalized groups—particularly lower-caste Hindus and Muslims—became the cornerstone of Yadav’s political identity. He entered the legislative assembly in 1967, but his trajectory was interrupted by a 19-month detention during the national emergency in the mid-1970s.

Yadav’s rise to power was marked by a series of shifting alliances and party realignments. He first attained the state's top executive office in 1989, leading a government that relied on fragile coalitions. His tenure was defined by intense volatility, particularly surrounding the 1990 confrontation at the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. Following the mosque's destruction in 1992, he founded the Samajwadi Party, positioning himself as a defender of the Muslim community. This move solidified his base but fueled a bitter, long-term rivalry with the Bahujan Samaj Party and its leader, Kumari Mayawati.

Beyond state borders, Yadav played a significant role in national politics. In 1996, he narrowly missed the chance to become India's prime minister, instead serving as the union minister of defense. Even as his party’s influence fluctuated in later years, he remained a central figure in Uttar Pradesh. By the time he stepped aside in 2012 to allow his son, Akhilesh Yadav, to lead the state, he had cemented a political dynasty that continued to shape electoral outcomes in India’s most populous state well after his death in 2022.
