How a French ballad about a failing romance became the world's most defiant anthem
In short: Born from a poolside breakup in France, My Way was transformed by Paul Anka into a self-indulgent masterpiece for Frank Sinatra. It became a global cultural touchstone, soundtracking everything from political doctrines and funeral services to punk rock riots and violent karaoke disputes in the Philippines.
The song began as Comme d'habitude, written by Jacques Revaux and Claude François in 1967. Inspired by the end of François's romance with France Gall, it captured the emotional routine of a dying relationship. Paul Anka later discovered the track in France and, sensing a hit for the me generation, rewrote the lyrics in a New York hotel room. He tailored the song to Frank Sinatra, using the brash, self-assured language he associated with the Rat Pack.
Sinatra recorded the song in a single take in 1968, though he reportedly grew to despise it, viewing the lyrics as self-serving. Despite his personal distaste, the song became his signature. Its cultural reach is immense: it inspired the Sinatra Doctrine, a term used by Soviet official Gennadi Gerasimov in 1987 to describe the policy allowing Warsaw Pact nations to determine their own paths. It has also served as a funeral staple, a symbol of defiance at sporting events, and even a catalyst for violence in Filipino karaoke bars.
The song's versatility allowed for radical reinterpretations. While Elvis Presley delivered a successful, gold-certified version in 1977, the most jarring shift came from Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious. His 1978 punk rendition, featuring profanity and a frantic tempo, was praised by Leonard Cohen for exploding the certainty and self-congratulation of the original. By stripping away the polish, Vicious turned the anthem of individual triumph into a raw, desperate expression of universal human struggle.
