Why the world's most famous New York anthem was born in a fit of rage
In short: The iconic theme song for New York City was not a love letter, but a desperate, angry replacement for a rejected track. Composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb wrote it in a fury after Robert De Niro dismissed their original work as too weak for the 1977 film.
The song's origins are rooted in creative frustration. During the production of Martin Scorsese's 1977 musical New York, New York, lead actor Robert De Niro convinced the director that the initial theme song was insufficient. Kander and Ebb, tasked with writing a suite of songs for the film, were forced to compose a replacement quickly. The resulting track, performed by Liza Minnelli, was a departure from their original, which had featured lyrics suggesting the city was a nice place to visit but not to live.
Frank Sinatra transformed the song into a global phenomenon after his associate Frank Military sent him a recording. Sinatra began performing it in 1978, eventually developing the signature massive rallentando—a gradual slowing of tempo—that defines his version. His 1980 recording for the album Trilogy: Past Present Future became his final Top 40 hit, peaking at number 32 on June 14, 1980. Sinatra also famously altered the lyrics, replacing Ebb's original list of superlatives with his own, a change the lyricist accepted despite his reservations.
The song's legacy is inseparable from New York City's cultural fabric. It has become a staple at social events, sports arenas, and even the Times Square New Year's Eve celebration. While the New York Yankees played the song after every home game for decades, the track has also been subject to countless parodies, from Swedish comedy groups to The Simpsons. Despite its ubiquity, the song remains a complex symbol of the city, often embraced as a celebratory anthem even when its origins were born from a heated, last-minute creative clash.
