The band that won a tournament against Linkin Park
In short: In 2014, an unsigned rock group pulled off a massive underdog victory, defeating icons like Linkin Park in a televised competition. This wasn't just a lucky break; it was the catalyst for a band that blends 1970s glam with modern art-rock aesthetics.
Palaye Royale formed in 2008 in Las Vegas as Kropp Circle. The band's core is built on family dynamics: brothers Sebastian Danzig, Remington Leith, and Emerson Barrett. Their early trajectory was shaped by unconventional advice; their mother was encouraged by Paul Weller of the Jam to let the brothers drop out of school to pursue music full-time. This gamble paid off as they transitioned from acoustic soft rock to a high-concept 'fashion-art rock' style.
The band's identity is rooted in personal history. They adopted the name Palaye Royale in 2011 as a tribute to the Toronto dance hall where their grandparents first met. Their sonic palette ranges from the glam of David Bowie and T. Rex to the grit of the New York Dolls and the raw energy of the Sex Pistols. Critics describe their sound as a collision of My Chemical Romance-influenced rock and Stones-y blues.
Significant milestones include a 2014 win at MTV's Musical March Madness. Since signing with Sumerian Records in 2015, they have released five full-length albums. Despite a volatile journey, including a 2019 arrest of Sebastian Danzig and the 2020 firing of Daniel Curcio, they continue to evolve, recently announcing their sixth album, Amsterdamage, slated for 2027.
