How a Texas glam band transformed into the architects of 1990s groove metal
In short: Pantera began as a spandex-clad glam act before shedding their neon image for a heavier, rhythmic sound that redefined heavy metal. Despite internal fractures and personal struggles, they became one of the most influential bands in history, selling 20 million records and pioneering the aggressive, mid-tempo style known as groove metal.
Formed in 1981 in Arlington, Texas, by brothers Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul Abbott, Pantera spent their early years chasing the glam metal aesthetic. Their first three albums, released on their independent label, Metal Magic Records, struggled to gain traction. By 1986, the band sought a heavier direction, eventually recruiting vocalist Phil Anselmo. This transition was marked by a shift away from high-pitched, power metal-style vocals toward a more abrasive, guttural delivery, and the adoption of a darker, denim-and-leather image.
The band’s 1990 major-label debut, Cowboys from Hell, is widely considered their official starting point. It introduced the "power groove" sound—a blend of thrash-influenced riffs and southern-rooted rhythms. This evolution continued with 1992's Vulgar Display of Power and 1994's Far Beyond Driven, the latter of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. These records cemented their status as metal icons, earning them multiple Grammy nominations and platinum certifications.
Internal stability, however, proved elusive. By 1995, severe back pain led Anselmo to rely on heroin, causing deep rifts within the group. Recording sessions for 1996's The Great Southern Trendkill were held separately, and the band eventually broke up in 2003. Tragedy struck in 2004 when Dimebag Darrell was killed on stage, followed by Vinnie Paul’s death in 2018. Despite these losses, the band’s legacy persists; in 2022, surviving members Rex Brown and Anselmo announced a reunion tour, with Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante filling the Abbott brothers' roles.
