How a Hiroshima girl group redefined Japanese pop through technology and futuristic choreography.
In short: Formed in 2000, Perfume evolved from local idols into a global technopop phenomenon. By blending heavily processed vocals with precise, futuristic dance, the trio of Nocchi, Kashiyuka, and A-chan transcended traditional idol tropes to become one of Japan's most successful musical acts, eventually taking their high-tech spectacle to international stages.
Perfume began in 2000 at the Actors School Hiroshima, where Ayaka Nishiwaki, Yuka Kashino, and original member Yuka Kawashima formed the group. After Kawashima departed to focus on her studies, Ayano Ōmoto joined the trio. Their name, Perfume, was chosen because the three original members shared the kanji for fragrance in their names, reflecting their aspiration to soothe and bring happiness to their listeners. In 2003, they moved to Tokyo, signed with Amuse Inc., and began working with producer Yasutaka Nakata, who crafted their signature technopop sound.
The group's breakthrough arrived in 2007 with the single 'Polyrhythm,' which gained massive exposure through a national recycling campaign commercial. This success propelled their 2008 debut studio album, Game, to the top of the Oricon charts—a feat not achieved by a technopop group since Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1983. Their sound, characterized by autotune, vocoders, and elements of house and techno, was matched by a visual identity defined by futuristic imagery and intricate choreography coordinated by their long-time collaborator, Mikiko.
In 2012, Perfume signed a global contract with Universal Music Group, marking a shift toward international expansion. They maintained their authentic identity rather than adapting to foreign markets, a strategy that saw them perform at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2013 and embark on multiple world tours. By their 25th anniversary in 2024 and 2025, they released a two-part concept album, Nebula Romance, before announcing a hiatus to conclude in 2025. Over their career, they achieved nine consecutive number-one albums, cementing their legacy as pioneers who successfully merged electronic music with idol culture.
