How a school-themed idol group birthed a global heavy metal phenomenon
In short: Suzuka Nakamoto, known as Su-metal, began her career in a Japanese school-themed idol group called Sakura Gakuin. While most sub-units disbanded upon graduation, her heavy music club evolved into the internationally acclaimed band Babymetal, defying expectations to become a permanent, touring force in the global metal scene.
Born in Hiroshima in 1997, Nakamoto entered the entertainment industry early, winning a toy cosmetics contest at age five and later training at the Actor's School Hiroshima. Her professional trajectory accelerated in 2007 when she signed with Amuse Inc., leading to her participation in the trio Karen Girl's. By 2010, she joined the newly formed Sakura Gakuin, an idol group structured around the Japanese compulsory education system, where members were required to leave upon graduation.
Within Sakura Gakuin, producer Kobametal established the Heavy Music Club, featuring Nakamoto as lead vocalist alongside dancers Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi. This sub-unit, performing under the name Babymetal, was initially expected to dissolve when Nakamoto graduated in 2013. However, the group's viral success prompted a departure from the standard idol model, allowing them to continue as an independent band. Since then, they have released five studio albums, including 2014's Babymetal and 2025's Metal Forth, while embarking on extensive world tours.
Nakamoto’s influence has expanded beyond performance. In 2018, she was recognized on an Oricon list for her vocal ability, and she has increasingly contributed to the band's creative output. She received her first songwriting credit in 2022 for the lyrics to 'Divine Attack (Shingeki)' and was the sole lyricist for the 2025 track 'White Flame'. Today, she remains the core of a project that successfully bridged the gap between Japanese idol culture and international heavy metal, maintaining a unique artistic identity that she often visualizes through color.
The transition from a school-themed sub-unit to a standalone global act marks a significant shift in the management of idol talent. While Sakura Gakuin followed strict age-based limitations, Babymetal's survival post-2013 proved that the project possessed a distinct market viability independent of its parent group. This evolution highlights the fluidity of modern Japanese music production, where experimental concepts can transcend their original constraints to achieve long-term commercial and critical success.
