How a Boston band’s strange, stop-and-start sound defined the alternative rock of the 1990s
In short: Formed in 1986, the Pixies blended aggressive punk energy with enchanting pop melodies. Their signature loud-quiet-loud dynamics and cryptic, surrealist lyrics became a blueprint for the alternative rock boom. Though they found only modest initial success in the United States, their influence on bands like Nirvana remains their greatest legacy.
The band originated in Boston in 1986 when singer-guitarist Black Francis and guitarist Joey Santiago, former roommates, placed a newspaper advertisement for a bassist who enjoyed both Hüsker Dü and the folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary. Kim Deal responded to the call, bringing along drummer David Lovering to complete the lineup. The group quickly became a fixture in the local club scene, eventually releasing their full-length debut, Surfer Rosa, in 1988.
Surfer Rosa established the band’s hallmark sound: a volatile mix of searing, aggressive guitars and Francis’s screeching vocals, balanced by Deal’s gentler backup singing. This sonic tension was matched by Francis’s lyrics, which drew from eclectic sources including his Pentecostal upbringing, UFOs, and the 1928 Surrealist film Un Chien andalou. By their 1989 album Doolittle, the band had perfected the stop-and-start dynamics that would later define the sound of 1990s alternative rock, particularly influencing Nirvana.
Internal tensions eventually led to the group’s effective dissolution by the release of their 1991 album, Trompe le Monde. During this hiatus, Francis pursued solo projects under names like Frank Black, while Deal fronted the Breeders. The Pixies reunited in 2004 for a series of world tours, and despite Deal’s departure in 2013, the band has continued to record and tour with various bassists, releasing subsequent albums such as Indie Cindy in 2014 and Head Carrier in 2016.
