The Brazilian musical pioneer whose birthday is celebrated on the wrong day
In short: Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho, known as Pixinguinha, transformed Brazilian music by blending Afro-Brazilian rhythms with modern jazz. Though he is a national icon, his official birthday celebration remains fixed on April 23rd, despite 2016 research proving he was actually born on May 4th, 1897.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Pixinguinha was a central figure in the development of choro, a genre defined by its sophisticated harmonies and syncopated rhythms. His early career began in 1912, performing in Lapa’s cabarets. By 1919, he formed the influential group Os Oito Batutas. Their success was groundbreaking; they performed in elite venues previously closed to black musicians, sparking intense public debate regarding race, national identity, and the influence of foreign musical styles like American jazz.
After a successful 1921 tour in Paris, Pixinguinha returned to Brazil with a modernized perspective. He expanded his band’s instrumentation to include saxophones, trumpets, and piano, moving away from traditional string-heavy ensembles. As a leader of the Orquestra Victor Brasileira in the late 1920s, he mastered the art of writing complex arrangements for large groups, a necessity for the burgeoning radio industry. His compositions, such as 'Carinhoso' and 'Lamento', initially faced criticism for their jazz-inspired elements but are now considered essential pillars of the Brazilian musical canon.
His later years were marked by economic hardship, leading him to sell the rights to many of his compositions to flautist Benedito Lacerda. This arrangement resulted in Lacerda being credited as a co-composer on works he did not write, including pieces created when Lacerda was still a child. Despite these struggles, Pixinguinha’s legacy is profound. He was one of the first to integrate Afro-Brazilian percussion into standard ensembles, and his influence remains foundational to samba and bossa nova. Today, he is remembered through statues, films, and the National Day of Choro, which continues to be observed on April 23rd, the date once mistakenly believed to be his birthday.
