How a random dictionary selection became one of the world's most influential rock bands
In short: Formed in an Athens, Georgia, church in 1980, R.E.M. evolved from a regional college-circuit act into global icons. By prioritizing creative freedom and a unique, jangle-guitar sound, they defined the alternative rock movement, eventually selling over 90 million albums before their amicable dissolution in 2011.
The band began when Peter Buck and Michael Stipe met at a local record shop in 1980. They soon connected with Bill Berry and Mike Mills, who had performed together since their high school years in Macon. The quartet initially rehearsed in a deconsecrated Episcopal church, developing a sound characterized by Buck's arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's cryptic vocal delivery. Their name was chosen by Stipe at random from a dictionary, though it is often mistaken for the sleep stage; others have suggested it honored photographer Ralph Eugene Meatyard.
Throughout the 1980s, the group built a dedicated following through constant touring and a series of acclaimed albums, including their 1983 debut, Murmur. Their transition to major-label status with Warner Bros. in 1988 marked a shift toward international stardom. The early 1990s proved to be their commercial peak, with Out of Time and Automatic for the People cementing their status as alternative rock pioneers. These records, featuring hits like 'Losing My Religion', showcased a willingness to experiment with mandolins, strings, and non-traditional arrangements.
The mid-1990s brought both massive success and significant turmoil. A 1995 tour was marred by serious health crises, including a brain aneurysm suffered by Berry. Following his departure in 1997, the remaining trio continued to record and tour, though they faced mixed commercial results. Despite the challenges, the band maintained their artistic integrity, collaborating with producers like Jacknife Lee on their final albums. Their legacy remains secure, marked by a 2007 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a rare, full-member reunion in 2024.
