In short: Formed in 1967 at the University of Illinois, REO Speedwagon evolved from a local frat-party band into a global powerhouse. Over nearly six decades, they navigated countless lineup changes and a shift from hard rock to pop, ultimately selling over 40 million records before retiring the name in 2024.

The band’s origins trace back to the fall of 1966, when keyboardist Neal Doughty met drummer Alan Gratzer at the University of Illinois. By 1967, they had solidified a lineup and chosen their name after Doughty spotted 'REO Speed Wagon' on a blackboard—a reference to a 1915 truck designed by Ransom Eli Olds. They famously chose to spell out the letters individually rather than pronouncing it as a single word.

Early years were defined by constant experimentation and regional touring across the Midwest. The band’s profile rose significantly after guitarist Gary Richrath joined in 1970, bringing original compositions and a relentless drive. Despite early instability in lead vocalists, the band eventually found commercial gold. Their 1980 album, Hi Infidelity, became a massive success, spending 15 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and eventually earning a Diamond Award for over 10 million copies sold.

Throughout the 1980s, the band produced chart-topping hits like 'Keep On Loving You' and 'Can't Fight This Feeling.' However, the group was never static. After decades of touring and recording, the band officially retired the REO Speedwagon name in December 2024 following irreconcilable differences between bassist Bruce Hall and vocalist Kevin Cronin. Despite the formal retirement, the legacy continues through various reunions, including a 2026 museum exhibit opening in Peoria honoring the late Gary Richrath, where the classic lineup performed together once more.

The band’s history is a testament to endurance, with Neal Doughty serving as the only constant member for 55 years until his retirement from touring in 2023. While the touring entity ceased, the members have remained active in various capacities, proving that even after the final curtain falls on a band's official career, the music and the connections formed in those early Champaign days remain deeply rooted.
