How an Argentine rock pioneer became the Elvis Presley of Latin America
In short: Roberto Sánchez-Ocampo, known as Sandro, transformed Latin American music by pioneering rock in Spanish. Rising to fame in the 1960s, his electrifying performances earned him comparisons to Elvis Presley. Beyond his massive record sales, he broke barriers as the first Latino artist to sell out Madison Square Garden's Felt Forum.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1945, Sandro was raised in the suburb of Valentín Alsina. His musical roots were deeply personal; he identified his style as Romani, tracing his heritage to a paternal grandfather who was a Russian Rom from Hungary. By 1961, he formed the group Sandro & los de Fuego, gaining widespread popularity through the television show Sábados Circulares. He eventually moved beyond his early Elvis-inspired imitations to forge a distinct, enduring musical identity.
Sandro’s commercial success was immense. He released 52 official records, with estimates of total sales ranging from eight million to over 10 million copies. His hit song "Rosa, Rosa" alone sold two million copies. His influence was global, with international stars like Liza Minnelli, Burt Bacharach, and Julio Iglesias recording his work. In 1990, peers honored him with the album Padre del rock en castellano, cementing his status as a foundational figure in Spanish-language rock.
His career extended into film and television, where he starred in 11 movies and directed one feature. His reach was truly international; he performed on The Ed Sullivan Show and sold out the 5,000-capacity Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden five times during the 1970s. In 2005, he received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Despite his massive success, his later years were marked by health struggles stemming from a lifelong smoking addiction. Following a heart–lung transplant in 2009, he passed away in January 2010 due to complications.
