The oldest complete musical composition in history was once a stand for flowerpots.
In short: Discovered in 1883 on a marble pillar in Turkey, the Seikilos epitaph is the world's oldest surviving complete musical composition. Before its significance was realized, the stone was sawed flat to serve as a pedestal for a woman's flowerpots, tragically destroying a line of the ancient inscription forever.
The Seikilos epitaph, likely dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD, is a unique artifact from the ancient town of Tralles. Unlike other ancient musical fragments, this stele preserves both lyrics and vocal notation. The text features an elegiac distich followed by a song that encourages the reader to shine and remain joyful because life is fleeting. The stone speaks in the first person, presenting itself as a long-lasting monument to immortal memory.
The melody’s structure has sparked extensive scholarly debate. While the notation is clearly diatonic, experts disagree on its specific tonal classification, with some identifying it as Phrygian and others as Ionian. A notable feature is the presence of stigmai—dots above the musical notation—whose function remains contested. Some theorists interpret them as indicators of arsis, or rhythmic emphasis, while others argue they represent a complex hierarchy of strong and weak notes within the measure.
The artifact's survival is as remarkable as its music. After being damaged for domestic use by Edward Purser, the stele passed through private collections before being moved to The Hague during the 1922 Burning of Smyrna. It was eventually acquired by the National Museum of Denmark in 1966. Intriguingly, some musicologists suggest the melody shares a structural relationship with the Roman liturgy’s Hosanna antiphon, potentially indicating that ancient Greek themes persisted in instrumental repertoires long after their original context faded.
