Why your walls are never truly soundproof
In short: Architects often use the Sound Transmission Class (STC) to rate how well a partition blocks noise. But while a high STC score might promise silence, even a tiny gap can cause a massive failure in acoustic isolation, turning a quiet room into a noisy one.
The Sound Transmission Class (STC) is an integer rating used primarily in the US to measure how effectively a building partition—such as a wall, door, or window—attenuates airborne sound. Based on ASTM E413 standards, the rating is derived from laboratory measurements of sound attenuation at sixteen specific frequencies, ranging from 125 Hz to 4000 Hz. While it is a useful metric for evaluating the annoyance of speech, it is less reliable for assessing low-frequency noise from machinery or music.
Achieving high sound isolation involves complex physical principles. Two fundamental methods include increasing a partition's thickness and adding mass, such as extra layers of gypsum. However, doubling the mass does not double the STCT rating because the decibel loss measurement is non-linear. For instance, adding a layer of gypsum to a light-gauge steel stud partition might yield a 5-point increase, whereas doing the same to a heavy-gauge steel or wood stud partition may only provide 2 to 3 additional points.
The effectiveness of a partition is also highly sensitive to structural integrity. Even a tiny 0.1% opening in a partition can reduce transmission loss from 40 dB to 30 dB. A much larger 5% opening can cause a catastrophic drop from 40 dB to just 13 dB. Furthermore, certain phenomena like the 'coincidence effect' can make a partition nearly transparent to sound when the wavelength of a bending wave matches the incident sound wave. For standard 16 mm gypsum board, this critical frequency occurs at approximately 2500 Hz, directly impacting the overall STC value.
