In short: Steppenwolf defined the late 1960s counterculture with a sound that accidentally coined the term heavy metal. Born from a Canadian band’s reinvention in Los Angeles, their trajectory was marked by constant personnel shifts, legal battles over their own name, and a legacy that stretched from Easy Rider to the Hall of Fame.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1967, Steppenwolf emerged from the remnants of a Canadian group called the Sparrows. Singer John Kay, keyboardist Goldy McJohn, and drummer Jerry Edmonton recruited guitarist Michael Monarch and bassist Rushton Moreve to complete the initial lineup. Their name, suggested by producer Gabriel Mekler, paid homage to Hermann Hesse’s 1927 novel. The band achieved rapid, massive success, selling over 25 million records worldwide and securing 13 Billboard Hot 100 singles between 1968 and 1972.

The band's most enduring hit, 1968's "Born to Be Wild," was written by Sparrow guitarist Dennis Edmonton under the pen name Mars Bonfire. Inspired by a roadside billboard depicting a motorcycle, the track featured the phrase "heavy metal thunder," which inadvertently introduced the term "heavy metal" to rock music. The song gained iconic status after its prominent use in the 1969 film Easy Rider, where it soundtracked Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper’s journey across America. It sold over one million copies and earned a gold disc.

Internal friction defined the band's history. By the early 1970s, clashing personalities and shifting lineups led to multiple breakups and reunions. Following the original core's dissolution in 1972, John Kay led various iterations of the group, eventually rebranding as John Kay & Steppenwolf from 1980 until 2018. The band faced legal disputes over the use of their name by "revival acts" throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Despite these challenges, the band remained a significant cultural force, with "Born to Be Wild" receiving an inaugural selection in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s singles category in 2018.
