How a Brooklyn drug dealer became the greatest rapper of his generation
In short: Christopher Wallace, known as the Notorious B.I.G., transformed from a teenage street dealer into a global hip-hop icon. His debut album, Ready to Die, single-handedly revitalized East Coast rap. Yet, his meteoric rise was shadowed by a lethal coastal rivalry, ending in his tragic murder at age twenty-four.
Born in Brooklyn in 1972, Christopher Wallace grew up in a household headed by his mother, Voletta, while his father left when he was three. By his early teens, Wallace was immersed in the crack epidemic of the 1980s, balancing his life as an honor student with a burgeoning career in drug dealing. His distinctive lyrical style, characterized by a laidback delivery and semi-autobiographical storytelling, eventually caught the attention of Sean Combs, who signed him to Bad Boy Records in 1993. This partnership proved pivotal, as Combs secured a $1.5 million advance to reclaim Wallace's early recordings and launch his career.
The 1994 release of Ready to Die marked a turning point for hip-hop, shifting the genre's focus back to the East Coast. The album was a commercial and critical triumph, eventually achieving diamond certification. However, Wallace’s success coincided with a volatile rivalry between East and West Coast factions. This tension was exacerbated by his public feud with Tupac Shakur, a former friend turned adversary. Following Shakur’s murder in September 1996, Wallace became a primary suspect in the eyes of the public, despite his family’s insistence that he was in New Jersey at the time.
Wallace’s life was cut short on March 9, 1997, when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles. His second album, Life After Death, was released just two weeks later, debuting at the top of the Billboard 200. The album’s success solidified his legacy as one of the most skillful lyricists in history. Decades later, his influence remains profound, with institutions like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoring his contributions to music. His journey from the streets of Brooklyn to the pinnacle of global fame remains one of the most compelling narratives in the history of hip-hop.
