From Russian river barges to American jazz charts: the global journey of a folk melody
In short: Originally a rhythmic chant for heavy-duty barge haulers on the Volga, this Russian folk song transformed from a 19th-century labor song into a 1941 US number one. Its journey spans orchestral masterpieces, wartime humanitarian efforts, and even 1980s rock counterpoint.
The song, known in Russian as 'Ey, ukhnyem!' (meaning 'Yo, heave-ho!'), originated from the 'burlaks'—the arduous barge-haulers of the Volga River. While the melody was collected by Mily Balakirev around 1860 or 1861 from Nikolay Aleynikov, Balakirev's 1866 publication originally featured only the first verse. The melody's power lies in its connection to physical toil, a theme captured visually in Ilya Repin's famous painting of the same name.
The melody's reach extends far beyond Russian folk traditions. In 1922, Spanish composer Manuel de Fines arranged the song as 'Canto de los remeros del Volga' to raise funds for over two million Russian refugees displaced by World War I. The arrangement was prompted by diplomat Ricardo Baeza and all proceeds supported the League of Nations' relief efforts. The song also became a staple for bass singers, popularized by the legendary Feodor Chaliapin, whose renditions in the 1920s and 30s cemented its status in the classical repertoire.
In a surprising shift from folk to swing, Bill Finegan’s jazz arrangement for the Glenn Miller Orchestra reached number one on the US Billboard charts in 1941. This version benefited from the song being out of copyright, exempting it from the 1941 ASCAP boycott and allowing for heavy radio rotation. The melody's versatility is further evidenced by its presence in diverse media, from the theme of boxer Soda Popinski in the NES game 'Punch-Out!!' to the counterpoint in Billy Squier's 1981 hit 'The Stroke'.
