How a cancelled project became a tactical shooter masterpiece through environmental destruction
In short: After the narrative-heavy Rainbow 6: Patriots failed, Ubisoft rebooted the franchise into a multiplayer-only tactical experience. By prioritizing teamwork, tension, and a procedural destruction engine, the developers crafted a high-stakes environment where every bullet hole matters and individual skill is secondary to strategic cooperation and careful planning.
Development of Rainbow Six Siege began in January 2013 following the cancellation of the narrative-focused Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6: Patriots. A small team of 25 people was initially assembled to rethink the franchise, eventually growing into a 150-person group of shooter veterans. They abandoned the single-player campaign entirely, choosing instead to focus on the core concept of counter-terrorist operations. To ensure authenticity, the team studied historical events like the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege and the 2002 Moscow theatre hostage crisis, while consulting real-world units like the French GIGN.
The game's defining feature is the RealBlast destruction engine, which allows for procedural environmental damage. This technology forces players to think vertically and creatively, as walls, floors, and ceilings can be breached to create new sightlines or ambushes. To maintain balance, the developers implemented a material-based tearing system and physically based rendering, ensuring that different surfaces react realistically to explosives or gunfire. This focus on destruction required a complete overhaul of traditional level design to ensure maps remained logical even after significant structural damage.
Central to the game's design are the pillars of teamwork, tactics, and tension. Early internal testing revealed that a traditional respawn system favored individual skill over collaborative strategy, leading the team to remove respawns entirely. This decision increased the stakes of every action, forcing players to communicate and rely on their teammates to survive. By 2020, the game had surpassed 70 million registered players, cementing its status as a premier multiplayer title that rewards patience and tactical foresight over raw reflexes.
