The Scottish village where a single privy served the entire community
In short: In 1970, the village of Auchmithie lived without modern plumbing. This archival clip captures the transition from a communal bucket-flushing privy to a private, modern convenience.
Due to a lack of mains drainage, residents of Auchmithie historically relied on a communal privy. Those without a private 'thunderbox' on their own property had to use a dark, drafty shared facility where buckets were used for flushing. This required villagers to go for a walk just to spend a penny.
The footage documents a significant upgrade for the community: the construction of a new public convenience. To ensure inhabitant privacy and ease, this building features private keys, gender-specific areas, and toilets with flushing systems.
