Why finding your true self in nature might be impossible
In short: Broadcaster Laurie Taylor attempts a pilgrimage into the English countryside to find his soul, only to discover that modern nature is often just a managed spectacle.
In this 1984 BBC Archive clip, sociologist and 'confirmed nature-hater' Laurie Taylor navigates the tension between romanticized wilderness and industrial reality. Armed with Wordsworth and maps, he quickly finds himself overwhelmed by factory farms and massive machinery rather than pastoral peace.
Taylor explores the irony of modern tourism, observing how people consume the countryside through Visitors' Centres to avoid the 'bother' of actually being in it. Ultimately, he retreats to Hyde Park, preferring a city park where there is no social pressure to feel something profound about the scenery.
