The white skeleton you find on the beach is a masterclass in biological engineering
In short: Sand dollars are not just beach souvenirs; they are living, fuzzy discs covered in thousands of spines. This video explores how these unique echinoderms have evolved to thrive on the shifting, turbulent sandy seafloor, an environment most other sea creatures find impossible to inhabit.
While beachcombers prize the bleached white skeletons, or tests, of sand dollars, the living animal is a complex creature. As a type of flattened sea urchin, the sand dollar has evolved miniaturized spines and tube feet specifically suited for life on the sandy bottom. Researcher Rich Mooi of the California Academy of Sciences describes them as a 'pile of novelties' that have undergone extreme bodily modifications to survive in their harsh, shifting habitat.
Their diet is equally specialized. Rather than eating the sand itself, they consume the layer of algae and bacteria coating each grain. The skeleton serves as a functional tool for this lifestyle, allowing them to navigate and exploit an environment that would be inhospitable to many other species. The Pacific sand dollar, or Dendraster excentricus, serves as a prime example of these remarkable evolutionary adaptations.
