A 50,000-pound humpback whale intervened in a shark attack
In short: Marine biologist Nan Hauser recounts a harrowing encounter where a humpback whale seemingly stepped in to protect her from a tiger shark. This video captures the rare moment of interspecies intervention and an emotional reunion a year later.
While diving off the Cook Islands, Hauser was approached by a massive humpback whale weighing approximately 50,000 pounds (22,700 kilograms). For about 10 minutes, the whale engaged in a series of physical interactions, lifting her out of the water with its head, nudging her, and swiping at her with powerful pectoral fins.
Hauser believes these actions were an intentional effort by the whale to shield her from a nearby tiger shark. The footage highlights the profound complexity of marine animal behavior and the possibility of protective instincts crossing species boundaries.
