How a single cosmic ray can trigger a cascade of billions of particles
In short: When a high-energy cosmic ray strikes our atmosphere, it doesn't just stop. It initiates an extensive air shower: a massive, multi-generational cascade of subatomic particles that can span several kilometers in diameter, transforming a single primary particle into a vast, detectable storm of radiation.
The phenomenon begins when a primary cosmic ray—which can be a proton, nucleus, electron, photon, or rarely a positron—enters the atmosphere. As these high-energy particles collide with atmospheric molecules, they trigger a chain reaction. If the primary particle is a hadron, the first interactions produce light mesons like pions and kaons. This creates a hadronic shower component, where the decay of these particles fuels further generations of secondary particles.
Depending on the primary particle's nature, the shower may also be primarily electromagnetic. In these cases, high-energy gamma rays undergo pair-production to create electrons and positrons, which in turn produce more gamma rays through radiation. This complex process continues until the primary particle's energy is fully converted. While neutrinos are produced during pion and kaon decay, they are often categorized as 'invisible energy' because they rarely interact with detectors.
The scale of these events can be staggering. In 1962, a cosmic ray was recorded with a footprint twice as large as any previous event. More famously, the 1995 detection of the 'Oh-My-GeV' particle by the Fly's Eye system revealed a shower containing approximately 240 billion particles at its peak, originating from a primary energy of roughly 3.2 x 10^20 eV. Today, massive installations like the Pierre Auger Observatory in the Argentinean desert use thousands of detectors across 3,000 km² to study these atmospheric cascades.
