Identifying the Himalayas' hidden tigers by their unique markings
In short: In a region closed to outsiders for years, researchers are using high-resolution remote cameras to identify individual tigers. This footage captures the meticulous process of distinguishing big cats based on their distinct striping patterns.
The expedition explores Bhutan's jungles and mountains to investigate rumors of a healthy tiger population. Identifying these individuals is critical for validating a proposed 2,000-mile conservation corridor designed to connect habitats across Burma, India, and Nepal.
By analyzing eleven different images from various locations, researchers demonstrate how specific stripe patterns serve as unique identifiers for the last remaining big cats in this forgotten world.
