The ocean's most melodic giants use complex songs to connect and communicate

In short: Humpback whales are more than just massive mammals; they are extraordinary singers. These baleen whales can memorise intricate melodies and even pass these songs between individuals, creating a shared musical culture that follows the species across the vast, open oceans.

Male humpback whales are renowned for their elaborate courtship songs and displays. These vocalizations are not merely simple sounds but complex melodies that can be memorised and passed around to other members of the species. This ability to share and evolve songs suggests a sophisticated level of social communication and cultural transmission within their populations.

Physically, these giants are quite imposing. Typically ranging from 12 to 16 meters in length, a humpback whale can weigh approximately 36 metric tons. Their distinctive appearance includes a dark upper surface, a variable amount of white on their undersides, and long, narrow pectoral fins that can reach about a third of their total body length. They also possess large knobs on their heads, jaws, and bodies, which are associated with one or two hairs.

Their lifestyle is defined by extreme movement. Humpbacks undertake some of the longest migrations of any mammal, traveling between tropical or subtropical breeding grounds in winter and polar feeding grounds in summer. Some populations swim as far as 5,000 miles to reach these productive waters. To survive, they use specialized techniques like bubblenetting—exhaling bubbles in a spiral to trap food—and straining huge volumes of water through baleen plates to consume krill, small fish, and plankton.

While their numbers are increasing in many areas, they face ongoing threats. Before a 1985 moratorium on commercial whaling, populations were reduced by more than 95 percent. Today, despite their recovery, they still deal with challenges such as vessel strikes, underwater noise, and entanglement in fishing gear.
