Chiikawa began as one artist's wish to become a small crying creature
In May 2017 the illustrator Nagano tweeted that they longed to leave modern life behind and live as a simple little being that weeps over troubles, flees them, naps and dances. That creature became Chiikawa, a timid, hamster-like hero whose web manga has sold millions of copies and spawned an anime, a film and a mobile game.
The title shortens a Japanese phrase meaning something kind of small and cute. Nagano picked Twitter for its immediacy, opened a dedicated account and began posting the strip in January 2020. Kodansha published the first book on February 12, 2021, and by November 2024 sales, including digital copies, had passed 3.6 million.
The world looks sweet but is quietly dangerous. Chiikawa and friends live among armoured humanoids called Yoroi-san, who hand out paid jobs such as weeding and monster hunting, and those jobs can kill. Chiikawa lives in a house won in a yogurt lottery, cries easily, and mostly says childish versions of no; it took three tries to pass the grass-cutting exam that its friend Hachiware passed first time. Usagi, a rabbit-like troublemaker who may or may not be a rabbit, speaks only in yelps. The main three were first named Nitori, Ikeya and Donki.
Small absurd rules pile up. Drinking alcohol requires a licence won by passing a hard exam, which the honey badger-like Kuri-Manjū holds, and working at the local ramen shop takes a Super Part-Timer certificate. Darker threads include a cute beetle that turns out to be a monster luring the critters, and characters whose bodies have been swapped.
Doga Kobo's anime premiered on April 4, 2022, on a Fuji TV morning show, with its two leads voiced by child actors Nagano helped choose. The manga took the manga-division prize at the 53rd Japan Cartoonists Association Awards, merchandise took off in China and Hong Kong in early 2024, and a film about a mermaid island opened on July 24, 2026.
