Could cosmic collisions have delivered the ingredients for life?

Did Asteroids Spark Life? · 12:08 · Video: PBS Eons · Watch at the source

In short: While asteroid impacts are often viewed as purely destructive, new research suggests they may have been essential for habitability. This video explores how planet-shattering asteroids might have created the very environments where life first emerged.

New computer models from the Southwest Research Institute suggest that ancient asteroid impacts did more than reshape Earth's surface; they may have sparked life by creating vast underground hydrothermal systems. These high-speed collisions fractured the planet's crust, creating porous pathways that allowed hot water to circulate through the upper layers, much like the geyser networks seen in Yellowstone National Park today.

The scale of this activity was immense. Simulations indicate a single large impact could have generated up to 100 times the hydrothermal activity found in the modern Yellowstone region. Beyond Earth's history, NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission has provided direct evidence of life's potential precursors. By analyzing fragments of the asteroid Bennu, collected in 2023, scientists have revealed the presence of organic molecules—the fundamental building blocks of life.
