A mysterious hybrid found in Brazil challenges our understanding of species boundaries
In short: In 2021, a strange animal hit by a car in Brazil baffled veterinarians. It barked like a dog but climbed bushes like a fox. Geneticists later confirmed it was the world’s first documented hybrid between a domestic dog and a Pampas fox, a creature separated by millions of years of evolution.
The animal, named Dogxim, was discovered after a vehicle accident in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul. Upon recovery, her caretakers noted a bizarre mix of traits: she possessed the pointed ears and climbing habits of a Pampas fox, yet barked and behaved like a domestic dog. She also rejected standard canine food, preferring to hunt rats. Genetic analysis revealed she possessed 76 chromosomes, a unique count derived from the 39 pairs found in dogs and the 37 pairs typical of the Pampas fox.
This discovery is significant because these two lineages diverged between 6 and 7.4 million years ago. While hybridization occurs between closely related species like wolves and coyotes, such a cross between distinct genera is exceptionally rare. Researchers determined via mitochondrial DNA that Dogxim’s mother was a Pampas fox, while her father was a domestic dog. The study, published in August 2023, confirmed this as the first known instance of such a crossbreeding event.
Experts suggest that environmental pressures likely facilitated this encounter. Habitat loss in southern Brazil is forcing wild canids into closer proximity with human settlements where abandoned dogs are common. While some scientists believe this could be a sign of how species adapt to rapid environmental change, others remain skeptical that more hybrids will follow. They argue that such crosses are genetically risky, often resulting in health issues or reduced survival rates. Dogxim herself died in early 2023 under circumstances that remain under official investigation.
