Why your brain needs action before awareness to tackle climate change

Kris De Meyer: Feeling stuck on climate change? Here’s what to do · 14:11 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: We often believe that understanding the scale of the climate crisis is the first step toward solving it. However, neuroscientific insights suggest we have the sequence backward. To overcome the paralysis of climate anxiety, you might need to change your behavior before you can change your mind.

The conventional approach to environmental advocacy relies on a specific hierarchy: first, we increase awareness; then, we foster understanding; and finally, we trigger action. This logic assumes that if people simply grasp the gravity of the climate crisis, they will naturally move toward meaningful change. However, neuroscientist Dr. Kris De Meyer, Director of the UCL Climate Action Unit, proposes a different mechanism rooted in the science of decision-making.

According to De Meyer, the relationship between belief and behavior is often reversed. Rather than awareness preceding action, it is actually our actions that drive our underlying beliefs. By engaging in physical or systemic changes first, we can effectively rewire our brains to overcome the psychological barriers that keep us stuck. This perspective shifts the focus from the overwhelming task of changing global minds to the more manageable task of initiating specific, tangible behaviors.

This research-driven approach was highlighted during a TED Countdown event held in October 2024 in Brussels, Belgium. The event, hosted at The EGG, focused on navigating the complex dilemmas inherent in the green transition. Alongside De Meyer's talk, the UCL Climate Action Unit conducted a 'Breakthrough' session titled 'Becoming a climate ‘unsticker’.' This workshop, led by De Meyer and Deputy Director Lucy Hubble-Rose, provided professionals from sectors including finance, science, and policy with neuroscientific tools to break through the cognitive inertia that often prevents large-scale climate action.
