A carnivore's gut runs on bamboo that is ninety-nine percent diet
Giant pandas still carry carnivore guts and genes, yet about ninety-nine percent of what they eat is bamboo. Adults usually weigh one hundred to one hundred fifteen kilograms. Since twenty sixteen IUCN lists them Vulnerable; China's twenty twenty-one ruling matched that downgrade from higher alarm.
Endemic to China, they now occupy six montane regions mainly in Sichuan, plus neighbouring Shaanxi and Gansu, often between about twenty-four hundred and three thousand metres where old bamboo stands thrive. Farming, logging, and roads pushed them from former lowlands. The Fourth National Survey of twenty eleven to twenty fourteen, published in twenty fifteen, counted one thousand eight hundred sixty-four wild animals older than one and a half years; with cubs estimated at nine point six percent, total adults were put near two thousand sixty by twenty eighteen. Captive stock in two thousand seven held two hundred thirty-nine animals in China and twenty-seven abroad.
Molecular work in nineteen eighty-five settled a long debate: the giant panda is a true bear, the most basal living ursid, splitting from other bears about nineteen million years ago. Two subspecies are recognised. A. m. melanoleuca of Sichuan shows the classic black-and-white contrast; the Qinling form in Shaanxi, separated about three hundred thousand years ago, tends toward browner tones, a smaller skull, and larger molars. A false thumb—a modified sesamoid—helps pin bamboo while large molars and expanded jaw muscles crush tough stems.
Shoots can hold up to thirty-two percent protein and drive feeding from April to August before a leaf diet resumes. Raw bamboo carries cyanide; gut microbes help, and roughly eighty percent of absorbed cyanide becomes less toxic thiocyanate cleared in urine. Females raise cubs for about eighteen to twenty-four months. The black-and-white coat may disrupt outlines at a distance and blend in snow or shade, useful because pandas do not hibernate. Range has shrunk by an estimated ninety-nine percent since earlier millennia, so every remaining mountain pocket still matters.
