The hidden lives of the Congo's lesser-known lowland gorillas
In short: While mountain gorillas often capture the spotlight, western lowland gorillas offer a different glimpse into primate life. This documentary follows a silverback named Makumba to reveal the intimate dynamics of a family living in the dense jungles of the Central African Republic.
The film provides a rare look into the lives of the more obscure western lowland gorilla, of which over 3,000 live in the Dzanga-Sangha National Park. By following Makumba and his family for several months, videographer Thomas Behrend captures domestic behaviors such as frolicking offspring and the silverback's interactions with his mate.
The footage also highlights the environmental challenges of jungle life, including extreme humidity, mosquito presence, and nocturnal encounters with forest elephants. It serves as a dual perspective on the species, documenting both the animals' social structures and the experiences of the researchers studying them.
