Two very different vipers: one hides in the jungle, one probes the moon

Identifying Unknown Viper: Inside Bolivia’s High-Risk Mission | SLICE EARTH | FULL DOC · 50:47 · Video: SLICE Earth · Watch at the source

In short: The word 'viper' describes two extremes of exploration. In the Bolivian rainforest, herpetologists risk their lives to find a snake unknown to science. On the lunar surface, a robotic rover seeks ice buried in the solar system's coldest shadows. Both missions seek to map the unknown.

In the dense palm forests of Bolivia, Spanish herpetologists Juan Timms and Jairo Cuevas are engaged in a high-stakes biological census. Their goal is to identify a rumored viper that has never been formally described by science. This work takes place in a landscape of immense biodiversity where many species remain unknown. The team works alongside local palm cutters and community members to shift the cultural reflex from 'kill on sight' to a methodology of capture, study, and release.

The herpetologists track several of South America's most feared species, including the Mattogrosso Lancehead, the tropical rattlesnake, and the elusive Andean pitviper. Their mission is a collision of fear and respect, aiming to protect these animals while documenting their existence. By studying these snakes, they contribute to a deeper understanding of venom, medicine, and the delicate balance of the Amazonian highlands.

Simultaneously, the name 'VIPER' represents a technological leap in extraterrestrial exploration. NASA's Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover is designed to land at the Moon's South Pole for a 100-day mission. Unlike the biological search in Bolivia, this is a resource mapping mission. The objective involves investigating and examining ancient ice stores persisting throughout billions of years within perpetually dark craters—regions representing the solar system's most frigid locales.

Equipped with a 3.28-foot (1-meter) drill and three specialized instruments, the rover will provide the first resource maps of its kind on another celestial body. The data gathered will help determine how humans might one day harvest lunar resources for long-term space exploration. While the Bolivian team seeks to understand life in a hidden wilderness, NASA seeks to understand the origin of water across the solar system.
