Why this tiny poison arrow frog carries his tadpoles into the high canopy
In short: Raising offspring in the wild is a perilous endeavor. This video follows a poison arrow frog as he transports his young to treetop pools for safety, revealing the unexpected devotion and sophisticated parenting strategies found within the world of amphibians.
Featured in the 2008 series Life in Cold Blood, this footage highlights the complex behaviors of amphibians. While cold-blooded creatures are often unfairly dismissed as slow or solitary, this frog demonstrates a highly social and passionate approach to protecting its young, challenging long-held myths about these animals.
The series, presented by David Attenborough, aims to reshape our understanding of reptiles and amphibians. By capturing intimate, previously unseen moments, it reveals that these species are just as dramatic and sophisticated as their warm-blooded counterparts, fostering a deeper, more empathetic connection to their survival strategies.
