Can human intervention reverse seventy years of ecological silence?
In short: This documentary explores a massive conservation effort at Lake Constance to restore biodiversity lost to intensive farming. It follows the high-stakes methods used to save endangered species and repair fractured ecosystems in Central Europe.
The project addresses a crisis where local bird populations have plummeted by 65% over the last seven decades due to agricultural expansion. Led by ornithologist Peter Berthold, conservationists employ diverse techniques to combat this decline, ranging from clearing waterways for brown trout to raising giant storks that must be trained to 'play dead' for survival.
A particularly ambitious effort involves hand-reared endangered ibises; these birds are taught to migrate over the Alps using ultralight gliders. The initiative serves as a case study in ecological resilience, demonstrating how targeted human intervention can actively repair damaged habitats.
