The digital tsunami threatening the traditional automotive empire
In short: For decades, automakers have reigned supreme over the gasoline-powered car market. But a convergence of electric vehicles, autonomous technology, and shifting consumer habits is creating a revolution that could disrupt the industry as profoundly as the rise of digital commerce.
The automotive landscape is currently facing a massive shift. While traditional manufacturers once held undisputed control, new players like Tesla are driving the race toward autonomous technology. At the same computing-driven edge, the rise of electric vehicles is responding to urgent environmental needs, while services like Uber and other VTCs are capturing consumers who increasingly view car ownership as a hindrance rather than a symbol of freedom.
In the UK, the legal framework is already evolving. The Automated Vehicles Act 2024, which received royal assent in May 2024, establishes the high-level responsibilities for these vehicles. The Act distinguishes between 'user-in-charge' journeys, where a driver can take control, and 'no-user-in-charge' journeys, where the vehicle manages the entire trip. While the Act itself does not use the six-level automation scale defined by the Society of Automobile Engineers, this scale remains a standard for academics and manufacturers.
The economic stakes are enormous. According to projections from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, the UK economy might gain £66 billion annually from the AV sector by 2040. Additionally, 2022 government figures suggest that 38,000 high-skill roles in areas including AI and robotics could emerge by 2035. However, significant challenges remain, including risks of cyber attacks, data management, and the urgent need for worker reskilling to meet the rising demand for specialized data science skills.
