From homemade skateboard camera rigs to directing billion-dollar Hollywood blockbusters
In short: Joachim Rønning’s path from a small Norwegian coastal town to the helm of major Disney franchises is defined by an early obsession with cinema. His career, marked by a commitment to authentic, challenging production environments, has seen his films gross over 1.3 billion dollars worldwide.
Born in 1972, Rønning grew up in Sandefjord, Norway, where his fascination with filmmaking began at age 12. His father, a member of a local theater company, provided early exposure to the mechanics of production. By his teenage years, Rønning was already experimenting with short films and commercials, often improvising camera rigs by strapping equipment to skateboards. This hands-on education led him to Sweden, where he attended Stockholms Filmskola from 1992 to 1994.
Rønning’s professional breakthrough arrived with the 2008 film Max Manus: Man of War, which became the highest-grossing Norwegian movie of all time, selling over 1.2 million tickets. His international profile surged with the 2012 film Kon-Tiki, which earned historic Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Norway. This success paved the way for high-budget Hollywood projects, including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which earned nearly 800 million dollars, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which grossed half a billion dollars.
Known for his dedication to realism, Rønning’s recent work on Young Woman and The Sea involved the intense challenge of shooting entirely in open water to capture the story of Gertrude Ederle. As of 2025, his portfolio continues to expand with the release of Tron: Ares and upcoming projects like the sci-fi thriller Here Be Monsters. Despite his success in large-scale studio productions, Rønning has expressed a desire to return to self-developed projects, potentially set in Europe, to maintain a personal connection to his craft.
