From video vixen to a Joan of Arc for women
In short: Karrine Steffans transitioned from being a face of the hip-hop music video industry to a best-selling author. By documenting her history of abuse and exploitation, she aimed to reach women who might have dismissed earlier protests against the industry's systemic misogyny.
Born Elisabeth Ovesen in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Steffans moved to Florida at age 10. Her early life was marked by severe poverty and physical and emotional abuse from her parents. After being raped at age 13 and running away at 16, she lived on the streets for a month before becoming an exotic dancer. Her entry into the music industry began through a tumultuous relationship with rapper Kool G Rap, which eventually led her to Los Angeles in 1999 to protect her son from physical abuse.
Steffans debuted as a video model at age 21, appearing in high-profile videos for artists like Jay-Z, R. Kelly, and LL Cool J. In 2006, she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss the objectification of women and how she allowed herself to be sexually exploited to secure work. This narrative shifted her public identity from a 'video vixen' to a cautionary voice. Her memoir, Confessions of a Video Vixen, debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list in 2005, peaking at number five.
Her literary output includes several best-sellers, including The Vixen Diaries (2007) and The Vixen Manual (2009). Her 2015 publication, Vindicated: Confessions of a Video Vixen, Ten Years Later, featured her portrayal of a 'Joan of Arc' figure for females lacking a sexual revolution experience. Beyond her personal narrative, she has edited anthologies on sexual experiences and alcohol, and established her own publishing imprint, Steffans Publishing, in 2008.
