When testosterone surges 60 times above normal, elephant bulls turn aggressive
In short: This film captures the intense, high-stakes behavior of male elephants in Sri Lanka. It explores the aggressive dominance battles triggered by a unique biological state, set against the backdrop of an island recovering from decades of conflict.
The footage highlights the phenomenon of 'musth,' a period where male elephants experience a massive hormonal surge. During this state, testosterone levels can reach 60 times their normal levels, driving bulls to seek out and fight other males for dominance.
Filmed by Martyn Colbeck, the documentary also provides context on the survival of Sri Lanka's elephants following 30 years of civil war. It examines the fate of the island's famous 'great tuskers' and the emotional lives of these animals in a changing landscape.
