The hypercar that first existed only in a video game
In short: Before it hit the asphalt, the McLaren Solus GT lived exclusively in the virtual world of Gran Turismo. This video explores how a digital fantasy became a physical reality to compete with some of the world's most exclusive track-only machines.
Born from the 2017 Vision GT concept, the Solus GT was McLaren's response to an increasing number of rivals entering the track-only hypercar market. While it shares a lineage with the Senna GTR, the real-life production model underwent significant mechanical shifts.
The most pivotal change was moving from a twin-turbocharged V8 and electric motors to a pure rear-driven configuration featuring a naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine. This powerplant revs to 10,000rpm and produces 829bhp, reaching up to 858bhp via a ram-air effect at high speeds. The car features a carbonfibre tub, double-wishbone suspension, and a unique single-seat layout. Only 25 units will be produced, with each priced at over £3m. The video features Jethro Bovingdon testing the vehicle at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas to demonstrate its performance.
