The geological impossibility of a sinking continent
In short: For decades, the legend of Mu has captivated the imagination as a lost landmass in the Pacific. Yet, while it remains a staple of fantasy and pseudoscience, modern geology offers a firm rebuttal: continents simply do not sink or vanish in the timeframe described by myth.
The concept of Mu emerged primarily through the work of Augustus Le Plongeon, who linked the 'Land of Mu' to the mythical Atlantis. This narrative was later expanded by James Churchward, who claimed that Mu was a massive landmass located in the Pacific Ocean. Churchward asserted that this continent was eventually destroyed, a story that has since permeated both fantasy fiction and various pseudoscientific theories regarding lost civilizations. Churchward also associated this landmass with the hypothetical continent of Lemuria. These narratives have been analyzed in detail within the context of fantasy fiction. These stories often serve as a foundation for speculative world-building.
Despite its popularity in literature—notably explored in L. Sprague de Camp's 'Lost Continents'—there is no evidence to support Mu's existence. Geologists maintain that the idea is physically impossible based on our understanding of plate tectonics and Earth's crust. A continent is a massive geological structure; it cannot sink into the ocean or be completely destroyed within the relatively short periods of time suggested by folklore and legends.
The persistence of Mu serves as a fascinating study in how mythology can be codified into 'pseudo-history.' While the legends provide a rich tapestry for fiction, they lack any factual basis in the physical sciences. By examining the gap between these narratives and geological reality, we can see how human imagination often seeks to fill the voids of the unknown with grand, albeit impossible, geographical features.
