Extreme wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense across the globe
In short: While the total area burned on Earth may be declining, the energy behind individual fires is changing. Recent satellite data reveals that the most extreme wildfire events are occurring with much higher frequency, particularly threatening the boreal and temperate conifer biomes and impacting global carbon storage.
Recent satellite analysis has uncovered a troubling trend in fire behavior. By calculating daily clusters of summed fire radiative power over 21 years of data, researchers found that the frequency of energetically extreme wildfire events—those in the top 0.01th percentile—increased 2.2-fold between 2003 and 2023. Notably, the six most extreme events in this period all occurred within the last seven years.
This shift is not uniform across the planet. While total burned areas might be decreasing, fire behavior is worsening in specific regions, most notably the boreal and temperate conifer biomes. These intensified fires pose significant risks to carbon storage and increase human exposure to wildfire disasters. Climate change is widely recognized as a factor that exacerbates the conditions allowing these fires to thrive.
In the United Kingdom, the situation is equally pressing. The country is facing a growing wildfire crisis driven by prolonged hot and dry weather, which creates ideal conditions for blazes to take hold in moors, farmland, and urban parks. In France, the current wildfire situation has been described as the most severe crisis since the Second World War.
The causes of these blazes vary by region. In the UK, virtually all wildfires are the result of human activity. This includes deliberate acts like arson, negligent mistakes such as the misuse of barbecues, or inadvertent accidents like agricultural equipment faults or escaped managed fires, such as heather or grass burning.
