How China's massive ground force evolved from peasant infantry to a modular, high-tech machine.
In short: Tracing its roots to 1927, the People's Liberation Army Ground Force has undergone a radical transformation. Once a sprawling, peasant-based infantry army, it has shed its traditional division-heavy structure in favor of agile, technology-intensive combined arms brigades designed for modern information warfare, electronic combat, and long-range precision strikes.
The People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) was officially established in 1948, evolving from the Chinese Red Army. By October 1949, it had grown into a 4.9 million-strong force. Throughout the early 1950s, the military underwent significant consolidation, disbanding numerous armies to regularize its structure. For decades, the force relied on a traditional, division-based model, which by 1987 consisted of over 35 group armies and 73 regional garrison divisions. During this era, the military was largely infantry-focused, often lacking the mechanization and specialized equipment required for modern combined-arms operations.
A major shift began in the 21st century, culminating in the 2017 reforms. The PLAGF transitioned from a division-centric hierarchy to a modular system built around combined arms brigades. Today, the force is organized into 13 corps-sized group armies distributed across five theater commands. These units are highly specialized, categorized as heavy, medium, or light brigades, and equipped with advanced platforms like the ZTZ-99A tank, ZBD-04A infantry fighting vehicles, and diverse unmanned aerial systems. This modularity allows commanders to tailor forces for specific terrain and strategic needs, mirroring the flexibility of Western brigade combat teams.
Modern PLAGF doctrine prioritizes information technology, electronic warfare, and precision strikes. The old radio-based command systems have been replaced by integrated battlefield networks, utilizing satellite communications and UAV-based surveillance. While the force remains under the dual-command structure of the Central Military Commission and theater commands, its operational focus has moved toward high-readiness, technology-intensive capabilities. Special operations forces, army aviation, and surface-to-air missile units have expanded rapidly, ensuring the PLAGF remains a competitive, modernized force capable of operating in complex, conventional military environments.
