In short: With plumage of deep blue, green, and orange, the rainbow lorikeet is a spectacular sight. Yet, this highly adaptable parrot is also a formidable competitor, capable of displacing native species and causing significant disruption in both orchards and urban environments.

The rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) is a medium-sized parrot, typically measuring between 25 and 30 cm. Its vibrant appearance is defined by a deep blue head, a greenish-yellow collar, and a bright orange or yellow chest. While they are widely distributed along Australia's eastern seaboard—from northern Queensland to South Australia—their presence in other regions is often the result of human intervention. For instance, populations were established in Auckland, New Zealand, following illegal releases in the 1990s, and they were accidentally introduced to Perth in the 1960s.

This adaptability comes with ecological consequences. In Western Australia, they are classified as a pest because they compete with indigenous birds, such as the Carnaby's black cockatoo, for food and nesting hollows. Similarly, in New Zealand, authorities launched eradication efforts in 2000 to protect native honeyeaters and island habitats. Even in Australia, orchard owners often view them as pests due to their habit of stripping fruit-bearing trees.

Despite these conflicts, the species remains incredibly common and is considered of 'least concern' by BirdLife International. They are highly specialized feeders, using a unique papillate tongue to gather nectar and pollen from plants like eucalyptus and sago palm. This specialized diet makes them vital pollinators. However, their proximity to humans requires care; feeding them inappropriate foods, such as bread or honey-coated bread, can lead to serious health and feather-formation issues in young birds.
