Global temperature extremes have shifted toward warmer nights and fewer cold nights
In short: Researchers analyzing decades of global weather station data found widespread significant changes in temperature extremes. By examining indices from approximately 200 temperature and 600 precipitation stations, the study observed that over 70% of the sampled land area experienced a decrease in the frequency of cold nights alongside an increase in warm nights.
This study used gridded seasonal and annual indices from 1951 to 2003 to track climate trends. While temperature shifts were highly consistent, precipitation changes were widespread but less spatially uniform. The analysis relied on station data covering much of the Northern Hemisphere midlatitudes, meaning results may not represent all global regions equally.
Why it matters: The warming trend is particularly evident in the rising frequency of minimum daily temperatures.
